Since October 30th 2022, remote workers can now apply for Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa, allowing them to live and work legally in Portugal.
To qualify for the scheme, applicants must earn at least €2,800 per month - four times Portugal’s minimum wage.
Remote workers, commonly referred to as digital nomads, can now apply for a five-year residency permit or a one-year temporary stay visa. Applications can be processed at any Portuguese Consulate or at SEF (Servico de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras).
To qualify for the new visa, remote workers must provide proof of self-employment or a contract of employment, proof of income documents for the previous 90 days, and tax residency documents.
The new Digital Nomad Visa is an alternative to the existing ‘D7’ visa - a popular residency permit mostly aimed at retirees and ‘passive income’ earners. The D7 visa has a much lower minimum annual income requirement of €7,200 from ‘passive’ income streams like rent or investments.
Requirements for the Digital Nomad Visa:
• €2,800 minimum monthly income
• Proof of employment
• Proof of income documents for the previous 90 days
• Tax residency documents
Applicants can apply at SEF, or the Portuguese Consulate in any country.
